Nantes’s Graslin Square bridges contemporary and neoclassical styles

The Graslin Square or Place Graslin, in French, is a gorgeous area in the French city of Nantes. Most of the square is pedestrian, which makes a number of buildings more visible while facing each other. The most imposing building is the Graslin Theatre, which faces La Cigale Restaurant, on the Square’s southern side.

La Cigale, probably one of the world’s most beautiful restaurants, is an iconic Art Nouveau building. We discovered a remarkable collection of ceramic tile mosaics, beautiful mirrors covered with a thin layer of gold, frescoed ceilings, gorgeous ornaments enhanced with blending wood painting and painted ceramic in multiple blue tones.

The Graslin Square was one of the world’s public places to be equipped with gas lamps, in 1852. The local city’s administration, in 2012, started a restauration project to turn the Square into a partially pedestrian area.
