Passage Pommeraye, a historical witness of Nantes’s wealth

Nantes’s Passage Pommeraye is one of the first world’s covered shopping plazas, in France. Built in 1843 and renovated recently, the Passage is a three storey shopping arcade. Today the monument keeps fascinating us with its architectural splendour.

The Passage, which is a meeting point of two of Nantes’s districts, namely Place Royale and Place Graslin, connects two streets, situated on two levels, one 9 m lower than the other.

The Passage houses Renaissance style sculptures in addition to small shops, distributed on three levels, which are interconnected by a monumental large central staircase.

It is said that the concept of window-shopping was introduced at a larger scale with the construction of Nantes’s Passage Pommeraye.

While admiring the Passage we could actually walk through history. It is worth mentioning its vaulted glass ceiling and statue-lined walkways along with the imposing staircase.
